The grading systems’ report card

The grading systems’ report card

Anjali Reddy, Off Campus Editor

With the end of trimester two nearing, end-of-term projects and tests means students are receiving many grades. But what is the purpose of grading? The Vanguard tested the efficacy of grading systems by asking students and teachers to reflect on their experiences with four grading systems: letter grading; pass/fail grading; competency-based grading, or grading based on mastery of certain course objectives; and choosing and justifying your own grade based on feedback. Students and teachers assessed the efficacy of these grading systems as a reflection of knowledge and understanding, only responding to questions pertaining to feedback systems in their past experience. Of the 521 students and 81 teachers at the school, 251 students and 54 teachers responded. In the fashion of a typical report card, we used letter grading to assess these systems.
