The transformation from sweatpants and Nike Techs to baggy jeans and quarter zips is in full swing. And, within the past few months, the student body has been sporting nice cardigans and polo sweaters, too. We love it.
Fine, label it as “performative,” and keep asking the quarter-zip-epidemic participants where they store their matcha, but — you have to admit it — the student body has been looking pretty dapper recently. At a school in which students historically keep four hoodies on rotation and wear “groutfits” daily, it’s nice to see some presentability and color for once. And doesn’t it feel nice to be confident in what you are wearing? After all, when you look good, you feel good, and confidence is certainly key.
For years, the hockey teams have been dressing up for their psychs, and they always look fantastic. Perhaps they knew — long before we did — that when you feel confident in your appearance, you play well. A 2015 research article even found that “wearing formal clothing induces more abstract cognitive processing.” As a student body, it’s cool that we’ve started to notice this, too, as we strut down the hallways in our fancy attire shortly before acing that test or scoring the winning goal in our athletics.
So, keep it up. And in the face of adversity — friends taunting your jeans that are “too skinny” or making fun of your nice cardigan — just keep your head high and know that you, at the end of the day, are better because you are putting forth an effort. And that’s something to be damn proud of.
